The road
Batumi is Georgia's Black Sea resort city, 370 km west of Tbilisi. The E60 highway crosses the country through Imereti, and the new motorway sections with the Rikoti tunnels have replaced the old mountain pass. Door to door the drive takes about five and a half hours, with a stop or two.
A private transfer turns the journey into part of the holiday: leave when you want, stop in Gori, at Surami for fresh nazuki bread or at the Prometheus Cave near Kutaisi, and arrive at your hotel rather than a station. The V-Class makes the long road easy for families; the S-Class is the quiet choice for two.
We also drive Batumi to Tbilisi and Batumi to Kutaisi Airport. The return trip costs the same, and you can add it to the same booking.
Stops along the way
- 01
Gori and Uplistsikhe
The Stalin Museum and the rock-cut town of Uplistsikhe, an hour from Tbilisi.
- 02
Surami
Roadside bakeries selling nazuki, the sweet spiced bread — a five-minute stop everyone enjoys.
- 03
Kutaisi and the Prometheus Cave
A detour of about an hour for the illuminated cave halls, or for Gelati and Bagrati in Kutaisi.
- 04
Kobuleti
The first stretch of coast before Batumi; the sea appears on your right for the last half hour.
Which vehicle

Recommended for this route
Mercedes-Benz V-Class
On a five-hour drive comfort matters most. The V-Class gives every passenger a reclining leather seat and keeps the suitcases out of sight; the S-Class is the executive choice for one or two travellers.
