The road

Kazbegi — officially Stepantsminda — is the small town under Mount Kazbek (5,054 m) where the Georgian Military Road reaches the Russian border. The drive from Tbilisi is about 155 km and three hours, and it is one of the most beautiful roads in the Caucasus.

The route climbs past the Zhinvali reservoir, Ananuri and Gudauri to the Jvari Pass at 2,395 m, where the Soviet-era Friendship Monument looks over the valley, then drops into the Tergi valley. Above the town stands the Gergeti Trinity Church, now reachable by a paved road — ask your driver to take you up.

The pass is open all year but can close for a few hours after heavy snow. From November to April we recommend the Land Cruiser Prado; our drivers check conditions the evening before and again on the morning of your trip.
