The road
Borjomi lies in the wooded Mtkvari gorge and has been famous for its mineral water since the 19th century. The drive from Tbilisi follows the highway west past Gori and Khashuri, then turns south into the gorge — about 160 km and two and a half hours.
The town is the base for the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, for the Central Park with its warm spring, and for the ski resort of Bakuriani 30 km up the road. Many guests continue to Vardzia, the 12th-century cave monastery about two hours further south — book a full day for that.
The road is paved all the way. In winter the climb to Bakuriani is more comfortable in the SUV.
